NEW YORK (AP) — d concern over a second straight offseason that has seen many Bryce Harper Andrew McCutchen Jersey , Manny Machado and many other free agents remain without deals less than a month before spring training.“All the dead time in the last two free-agent markets is a larger threat to our game than any supposed dead time between pitches,” Tony Clark said Thursday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.Wanting to increase the pace of games and concerned about a drop in offense, management has made proposals to the union that include a pitch clock and rules changes. The players’ association says it will respond, and unlike last year the union appears open to discuss the issues.Against this backdrop, just 58 of the 164 players who exercised the right to become free agents following the World Series had announced deals through Thursday afternoon. That is up from 45 of 166 on the same date last offseason, but this year’s free-agent class contains far more accomplished players. Those still available included Harper, Machado, pitcher Dallas Keuchel and closer Craig Kimbrel.“When they’re signing that late, it’s just how major league owners choose to do business and how the commissioner’s office has directed them to do so,” agent Scott Boras said Thursday.Major League Baseball declined to respond to Clark and Boras, spokesman Pat Courtney said.Boras, more than most other agents, is known for negotiating late into the offseason. Last year, he reached a $110 million, five-year contract between J.D. Martinez and Boston that was announced Feb. 26 and a $75 million http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , three-year agreement between right-hander Jake Arrieta and Philadelphia that was announced March 12 — about a month after spring training began.“What we learned from last year, this is standard operating procedure,” Boras said. “The airplane of talent, when they’re at the airport, they may tell us when we can leave but no one’s flying anywhere without us.”Boras represents Harper and Keuchel. He says changes in club front offices have led to drawn-out negotiations for free agents.“I would imagine that in the analytic abyss, you want to explore your investment of having your staffs go out and find the gaps in trades before you explore for free agency,” he said.Boras said all the front-office hirings of analytics personnel have changed the mindset of decision-makers.“I can do more at greater value in the trade market than I can in the free-agent market because of our improved secret, special, unique science of algorithmic analytic function,” he said of their mindset. “We know the league better than others. We’ve invested millions in this. Let’s take time to use it.”Baseball used to have a rush to sign free agents after the World Series, similar to the hectic pace when the NFL, NBA and NHL offseason markets open. Because of late signings, some teams have had less time to promote acquisitions in an attempt to increase advance sale of tickets.“Damage to the marketing of the game is immense,” Boras said. No big-ticket players are coming to Baltimore. But the roster needs upgraded, and players signed to short-term deals can be traded for prospects over the summer."Orioles fans know that the free agent stove isn’t going to be that hot in Baltimore this winter. A team coming off a 115-loss season that just started what seems to be a massive organizational rebuild isn’t going to be throwing cash around to top free agents. After all Gregor Blanco Jersey , that would require a front office actually being in place. The industry agrees with this sentiment. MLB Trade Rumors released their annual Top 50 MLB Free Agents With Predictions and does not predict one of those players signing in Baltimore. In Jim Bowden’s piece highlighting the 35 best free agents and where they fit, he mentions the Orioles as potential fits for only two players. Forget hot, the stove may not even be lukewarm. But the Orioles do need to add players to their 2019 roster. Anybody who watched this team in September knows that. They jettisoned Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Brad Brach, Kevin Gausman, Darren O’Day, and Zach Britton at the trading deadline. Adam Jones will likely depart as a free agent. A new front office may want to complete the teardown of the major league roster by trading remaining assets for young talent. Possible trade candidates are Dylan Bundy, Mychal Givens, Andrew Cashner, Jonathan Villar, Mark Trumbo, and Richard Bleier (the last two depending on recovery from injury).Roch Kubatko indicated that the team will be at least somewhat active in the free agency market. He specifically cites question marks in right field, third base, catcher http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , and middle infield. Any trades made will most likely bring back players who are young and not ready for the majors. So yes, it appears as though the Orioles will have to sign some free agents in order to field anything that resembles a major league team.In addition to the need to put a somewhat competitive club on the field after a disastrous 2018 season (how would the fanbase and attendance react to another 115-loss season?), there is another need to sign some free agents: they could be flipped at the trade deadline for prospects. The Orioles farm system was universally ranked in the bottom third of the league coming into the 2018 season. July trades, the drafting of Grayson Rodriguez and Blaine Knight, getting back into the international market, and having the first overall pick in June’s draft will all positively impact the talent pipeline. With that said, the O’s minor league system is by no means great. Any opportunity to add talent and/or depth to it should be taken advantage of. Without many quality assets left to trade for minor league talent, signing free agents is one way of paving the way for trades this summer. It goes without saying that the Orioles should target free agents who are willing to accept one or two year deals so that the financial commitment isn’t overbearing if a trade doesn’t work out. The bottom half of MLB Trade Rumors’ list is comprised of projected one or two year deals. The other half of the equation is a player signing in Baltimore would need to be willing to play on a really bad team. What positions should the O’s target in free agency (position by position list of free agents found here)? The only two players Jim Bowden mentions the Orioles as fits for are outfielders Adam Jones and Carlos Gonzalez. I would love to see Jones back in Baltimore for sentimental reasons, but the outfield and DH appear to be set with some combination of Trey Mancini, Cedric Mullins, Mark Trumbo, and DJ Stewart. A host of other young outfielders could be ready at some point this year and it wouldn’t be wise for the Orioles to block major league ready prospects. I would hold off on signing an outfielder unless the deal is too good to pass up. Third base was mentioned by Kubatko as a potential position of need, but the list of available players is.... uninspiring. There is not one player (with a realistic chance of signing here) that I’d want. Renato Nunez it is! Depending on where Jonathan Villar plays and if Tim Beckham is non-tendered, middle infield is an area where the O’s could sign a free agent. There are several above-replacement level players on that list, including some who have had productive seasons recently. Many will get short contracts. Pitching Duane Kuiper Jersey , starting and relief, is where I think the Orioles should be most active. There is definitely a need, as Buck Showalter had tremendous difficulty getting through games with his pitching staff in September. After Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb, and Andrew Cashner, there are no proven major league ready options to fill out the rotation. Out in the bullpen, a solid veteran group was decimated by the July trades. Mychal Givens, a 28-year-old who was drafted as an infielder, is now the elder statesman. If pitchers down on the farm prove themselves ready over the summer, there is always a market for pitchers at the trade deadline. A look at a wrap-up of last year’s deadline trades indicates just how in demand pitching is. Teams are relying more and more on relievers in the postseason, making even slightly above average arms valuable. Not every player traded in July is at the caliber of Zach Britton; many are barely above replacement level. Those are the types of players who will accept one-year contracts this winter. We have weeks and months to debate exactly which players the Orioles should target as the market ebbs and flows. But for now I’m arguing that the Warehouse should be selectively active in the free agent market despite embarking on a rebuild. There are players available who are cheap, would upgrade the roster, and could be flipped to further restock the farm system over the summer.

The system’s top talent is expected to be down 4-6 weeks, missing the Arizona Fall League"Reds top prospect Nick Senzel has spent the last month or so out in Arizona taking part in the Reds instruction league, where he’s been getting some run in the outfield in order to insure peak positional versatility for the Reds in 2019. And the early review have been pretty great, as relayed from The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans:As it turns out, however, he was only fielding in the instructional leagues, and not hitting. Bobby Nightengale over that the Enquirer broke the news today that Nick Senzel has been dealing with a sore left elbow and, because of that, will require a procedure to remove some bone spurs. It’s been a tough year for Senzel, as he saw only 193 plate appearances in the minor leagues this season while dealing with a couple of different ailments. He missed most of the month of May dealing with symptoms from vertigo (something that also caused him to miss games in 2017) and, then Tyler Anderson Jersey , he missed the final two months of the season after fracturing an index finger. Finally healthy, the Reds sent Senzel to instructional leagues to get him some run in the outfield and, apparently the plan was to keep that rolling into the Arizona Fall League. Unfortunately, lingering pain in the elbow became too much to continue playing through and Nick and the team have opted to get the situation cleaned up. He’ll miss four to six weeks of the offseason program, but is expected to be perfectly fine come Spring Training.None of this really spells doom for the team’s hopes of finally, finally putting out a competitive product in 2019, but it’s becoming concerning to see the injuries begin to pile up on the Reds best position prospect in some time. It has to be extremely frustrating for Nick and the team. I guess the best hope is that everything sorts itself out now, in October of another lost year, rather than, say, July of 2019.
ason."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Farmers onlyFeaturesPlayoffsHistory/Hall of FamePeer into the FutureStat-Colored GlassesFanGraphs suggests the Cincinnati Reds have a big pitch framing problemNew Jose Peraza Jersey ,12commentsA tweak in how catchers are valued reveals a lot about the Reds offseason.EDTShareTweetShareShareFanGraphs suggests the Cincinnati Reds have a big pitch framing problemAaron Doster-USA TODAY SportsThe rumors persisted for much of the latter-half of winter, that the Cincinnati Reds - fresh off multiple major additions to their outfield and pitching staff - were in hot pursuit of star catcher J.T. Realmuto. The Miami Marlins are run as a combination ATM/vacuum, and Realmuto was the last star on their roster who had yet to be traded, and the Reds maintained contact with the fish until Realmuto was ultimately flipped to the Philadelphia Phillies for fireballing prospect Sixto Sanchez, among others.Front and center in the rumored Reds offer was catcher Tucker Barnhart, who at 28 years old is still under team control for 3 more years at a modest total of $11 million, and who has an option for year 4 at only $7.5 million. From Reds country with a 2017 Gold Glove to his credit already, Tucker is a plenty fine big leaguer, of course, which had many folks wondering why the Reds were so enamored with trying to upgrade their catching situation by chasing Realmuto. Heck, even some of the advanced metrics seemed to endorse Tucker as a viable top-tier catcher, as Baseball Reference valued him at an impressive 3.4 bWAR in that 2017 season. One thing stood out on Tucker’s ledger, though: pitch framing, or rather his lack of proficiency in that regard. Baseball Prospectus had already found a method of valuing that newfangled aspect of defensive catching, and their rankings of the top 117 catchers in all MLB during the 2018 season had Barnhart almost all the way at the bottom at #113. And while his 2016 and 2017 numbers were better - he ranked around 30th among all catchers, and near the bottom in most with enough chances to be considered ‘regulars’ - it’s clear that B-Pro was not exactly enamored with that part of the regular Cincinnati catcher’s game.On Wednesday http://www.redsfanproshop.com/authentic-cliff-pennington-jersey , FanGraphs added their own metric to grade catchers on their pitch framing, and it, too, is incredibly down on Tucker’s most recent forays into that art. Of the 38 catchers who logged at least 500 innings behind the plate in 2018, Tucker’s framing rated as the third worst. Of the 50 MLB catchers who have logged at least 1000 innings behind the plate since the start of the 2016 season, Tucker again ranked third worst, with only Salvador Perez and Robinson Chirinos below him. As a result, it has effectively tanked how valuable Barnhart has been for the Reds in the eye of FanGraphs, as his entire career to date is now valued at a grand total of 1.5 fWAR. His low framing marks during the 2018 season helped render him only ‘worth’ -0.3 fWAR, which was the third lowest in all MLB of the 27 catchers who had at least 300 PA offensively. In that light, it’s significantly more reasonable to see why the Reds might’ve been searching for an upgrade behind the plate, especially once an entirely new manager and pitching coach were brought on-board, ones who might well have pitch framing as a much higher emphasis than the previous regime.Of course, there’s also a lot going on with these numbers that might not solely be on Tucker’s shoulders. We’ve witnessed some of the most putrid collective pitching, top to bottom, that an MLB franchise could possibly roll out over the last three years Matt Harvey Jersey , with a revolving door of rookies and journeymen the ones throwing the pitches Tucker was tasked with framing. Precisely how much of his poor ratings can be attributed to his inability vs. the inability of pitchers to come anywhere close to hitting their spots is a very, very tight rope to walk, and it will certainly be interesting to see how 2019 plays out with the more established likes of Sonny Gray, Tanner Roark, and Alex Wood logging some 500+ innings on the mound. You also must wonder whether this was something Tucker, otherwise considered an excellent defensive catcher with his blocking and throwing skills, has ever really had as a primary focus. You’d think that if this came as a revelation to him, he’d be able to work to improve that skill, especially under the tutelage of pitching coaches who appear to be considering it a much larger area of need.FanGraphs’ David Appelman gives a pretty detailed discourse on exactly how this metric has been integrated into recent years worth of data and valuations, and I highly suggest you give it a read if this is something that has piqued your interest to date. Of particular note to Reds fans of yore is how much more valuable it shows that former draftee Yasmani Grandal has been over the years, as he’s now up over 27 career fWAR by this updated valuation. Safe to say that if you’re a believer in pitch framing’s value, that puts a final kibosh on all the old Red Reporter debates over whether Grandal or Devin Mesoraco would turn out to have the better overall career...What that means for the Reds catching situation going forward, I do not know. What I do know is that it’s a metric from a prolific source that suggests that the way in which the Reds have been going about their catching in recent years looks pretty bad, and highlights a very, very particular area in which it needs improving. Perhaps that can come from within with greater emphasis on the area, but perhaps it’s just a skill that’s either there or is not. And if it isn’t there Scott Schebler Jersey , well, it’s apparently a damn valuable commodity that needs to be found somewhere else. ST. LOUIS (AP) —is Cardinals have agreed to a contract that adds $37 million in guaranteed money for 2020 and ’21 http://www.piratesfanproshop.com/authentic-josh-bell-jersey , a deal that includes an option for 2022.The 33-year-old has a $14.5 million salary this season a part of a $52 million, six-year deal that included an $18.5 million club option for 2020 with a $2 million buyout.Under the new $39 million, two-year deal, he has guaranteed salaries of $18.5 million in both 2020 and ’21, and the Cardinals have an $18.5 million option for 2022 with a $2 million buyout. The 2022 salary would become guaranteed if he has 1,100 plate appearances combined in 2020 and ’21, including at least 550 in ’21.If the option fails to become guaranteed, it becomes a club option that includes $6.5 million in possible escalators based on 2021 plate appearances: $500,000 for 350, and $1 million each for 400 and each additional 50 through 650.He also gets a full no-trade provision and award bonuses that include $250,000 for making the All-Star team.“It’s really very humbling Bill Mazeroski Jersey ,” Carpenter said after Wednesday’s announcement. “To be able to potentially be here for an entire career is something that I don’t take for granted. Every day it’s something that I try to live up to.”He has a .273 batting average with 134 home runs and a .376 on base percentage in 1,031 games since debuting in 2011 with the Cardinals. Carpenter was an All-Star in 2013, 2014, and 2016. He finished among the top 10 in MVP voting in 2013 and last year.“He’s created enormous flexibility for the Cardinals because he was always willing to play a different position to allow us to maximize our team,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said. “Really what it says is he’s truly a team player. So, the reason we’re motivated to try to do this is where he’s at in his career, we wanted him to continue to wear the Cardinal uniform.”Carpenter was a 13th-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2009. He became the fourth St. Louis player since February to sign a long-term deal after first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, pitcher Miles Mikolas, and first baseman/outfielder José Martinez.“When we get a core player, we like to keep him here,” Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said.“We’ve made every effort to do that since I’ve been here and before.” Sanchez will be paid $19 million over two years to be Max Scherzer’s teammate again."Remember the good old days when Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer were dominating in the same starting rotation? Unfortunately Dave Parker Jersey , those times are long gone for the Detroit Tigers and their fans, but the Washington Nationals might be trying to rekindle some of that magic. The Nats agreed to a two-year contract with Sanchez on Thursday, according to a report from Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. The Nats will pay Sanchez $19 million over those two seasons, a price that rankled some of their fans. Not only is Sanchez a bit of a regression candidate, but he is actually more expensive than righthander Tanner Roark was projected to be in his final year of arbitration. Roark was traded to the Cincinnati Reds last week, presumably because of his pending 2019 salary obligations. Roark, 32, is nearly three years younger than Sanchez, and has comparable stats over the past two seasons.Sanchez earned his new contract thanks to a stellar 2018 season with the Atlanta Braves. He only made three starts in April and May, but was able to lock down a spot in the Braves’ rotation in June. He stayed hot all year long, managing a 2.83 ERA in 136 2鈦? innings before he was knocked around a bit in his only postseason start.Sanchez’s peripheral numbers weren’t quite as flashy as the sub-3.00 ERA Josh Harrison Jersey , but he was still a well above-average pitcher He maintained solid strikeout and walk numbers yet again — something he was even able to do in his worst years in Detroit — but finally figured out how to cut back on the home runs allowed. This helped him manage a 3.62 FIP and 3.81 xFIP in 25 appearances, good enough for 2.4 fWAR.One of the big reasons for this massive improvement? A change in his pitch mix. Brandon dove deeper into Sanchez’s 2018 season earlier this winter. It’s tough to say how sustainable Sanchez’s newfound ability to miss barrels will be. His two-seam fastball was a problem for his final three years in Detroit — he mysteriously used it more from 2015 to 2017 than he had from 2012 to 2014 — but he dropped that while throwing his cutter nearly three times as often last season. The result? Sanchez’s highest ground ball rate since 2014, which also happened to be the last time he managed an ERA under 4.99.Sanchez could also benefit from pitching in Washington’s top-heavy rotation. While the 5 2鈦? innings he averaged per start in 2018 were a big improvement from his 2017 numbers, he is still a ways off from the 6 1? frames (or so) that he averaged during his heyday with the Tigers. Washington’s bullpen was only a middle-of-the-road outfit last year — they may not strand as many runners as Atlanta’s ‘pen was able to for Sanchez in 2018 — but they might be at their strongest on days Sanchez starts. Thanks to the three-headed monster atop that Nationals rotation, the bullpen should be well-rested when Sanchez and [insert fifth starter here] take the mound. Is it a lot of money? Yeah, I think so, especially for a team still presumably in the hunt to retain Bryce Harper’s services for the next decade. But whether Harper returns or not, the Nationals have other holes on their roster to fill. If Sanchez has figured things out yet again, he’s a decent bet to provide some quality innings for a Washington ballclub still looking for postseason glory.

The Chicago Cubs' scored one run in 13 innings during their National League Wild Card Game loss to the Colorado Rockies, but they won't be pursuing a generational, 26-year-old talent to bolster their offense this offseason."Not going to happen," manager Joe Maddon said when he was asked if the Cubs would sign Bryce Harper, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.This comes after Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (h/t Tony Andracki of NBC Sports Chicago) reported that "the Cubs would love a shot at Harper http://www.rangersfanproshop.com/authentic-matt-moore-jersey , though ownership approval continues to appear unlikely, sources say."Andracki noted president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has discussed the budget issues he has been working under throughout the offseason as the team appears to be well on its way to surpassing the $206 million luxury-tax threshold for the 2019 campaign because of previous contracts.Still, the Cubs are in the middle of a competitive, win-now window, having reached the 2015 and 2017 National League Championship Series and winning the 2016 World Series. There is an offensive core in place with Kris Bryant, Javier Baez Curtis Granderson Jersey , Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras, among others, but the runs disappeared down the stretch. The scored one run in three of their final four games in 2018, and the concerns were magnified by the fact that they lost the National League Central in a one-game tiebreaker to the Milwaukee Brewers.Harper seems like the type of player a big-market team looking for offense would be willing to pay the luxury-tax penalty for to maximize its legitimate chances of winning a World Series given his age and the fact that he already has a National League MVP, NL Rookie of the Year, Silver Slugger and six All-Star Games on his resume. However Jaime Garcia Jersey , it appears the front office isn't willing to commit a long-term deal to that type of star power.Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported the Philadelphia Phillies are the "clear-cut favorite" to sign Harper at this point following a meeting with him in his hometown of Las Vegas on Saturday.
DETROIT (AP) — This time Nolan Ryan Jersey , the Kansas Citythree-run ball into the eighth inning, and the Royals stopped a five-game slide by holding off the Detroit Tigers for a 4-3 win on Friday night.Alex Gordon had three hits for the Royals, who hit four homers in 11-8 loss in the series opener. Rosell Herrera had two hits and drove in a run.“We made a couple mistakes on 0-2 pitches, and they cost us runs,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Other than that, our pitching was fantastic.”The sloppy Tigers committed three errors while losing for the eighth time in 11 games.“We just played terrible baseball,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We made errors and we made bad decisions.”Kennedy (3-8) won his second straight start, permitting two earned runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out six and walked none.“I’ve been executing in the last three games — that’s literally the only thing that has changed,” Kennedy said. “I’m throwing good pitches, and in meaningful spots, I’m throwing strikes.”Wily Peralta worked a shaky ninth for his 12th save. Ronny Rodriguez led off with an infield single, but James McCann bunted into a 1-6 forceout at second.“Wily’s more athletic than he looks,” Yost said. “He bounded off the mound and made a great throw to second.”Jeimer Candelario then drew a pinch-hit walk before Peralta struck out Dawel Lugo and Jim Adduci.Detroit left-hander Francisco Liriano (5-11) was charged with four runs, one earned, and six hits in six innings. He has a 1.88 ERA in his last four starts.Kansas City jumped in front on Detroit’s first defensive mistake. With one out in the first, Adalberto Mondesi singled and took off on a 1-1 pitch to Gordon.Gordon looped a single to shallow left, and Mondesi took a big turn at third and kept going when rookie Christin Stewart lobbed the ball into second.“I kept my head up on the play, and I’m always looking to make a play,” Mondesi said. “When I saw he was going to make the short throw, I went hard.”Stewart, a hitting prospect not known for solid defense, was making his 12th major league appearance.“That will be a learning experience for the kid,” Gardenhire said. “He’s got to be quicker getting to the ball Rougned Odor Jersey , and he’s got to get rid of it. If he makes a faster play and hits the cut-off man, everything is fine.”Gordon added an RBI single in the third, and the Royals scored two more runs in the fourth, aided by errors by first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stewart.“We’re going to be working on defense a lot in spring training,” Gardenhire said. “We’ll have our whole group together and we’re going to improve some of these things.”Rodriguez homered in the fifth for the Tigers, and Nicholas Castellanos doubled home a run in the sixth.Kennedy left after Pete Kozma reached on an error, and Castellanos made it 4-3 with a two-out double off Kevin McCarthy. Victor Martinez, playing in his next-to-last major league game, grounded out to first to end the inning.Martinez received an ovation before the at-bat.“I wish I could have gotten a hit there for the fans,” he said. “They are like a family to me. Families fight, and there have been some times when they let us know we weren’t playing well, but they are always here for us.”TRAINER’S ROOMTigers: With INFs Niko Goodrum (quad) and Candelario (back) still bothered by injuries, Harold Castro was promoted from Triple-A Toledo. Would the Blue Jays righty be enough atop the Cincinnati rotation?"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Farmers onlyFeaturesPlayoffsHistory/Hall of FameOff-seasonPeer into the FutureCincinnati Reds RumorsCincinnati Reds rumors: Toronto’s Marcus Stroman as a trade targetNew,36commentsWould the Blue Jays righty be enough atop the Cincinnati rotation?Mat Latos to Shin-Soo Choo back when the idea of adding (and not subtracting) was their big M.O.A viable trade partner generally has a few key characteristics. For one http://www.rangersfanproshop.com/authentic-matt-moore-jersey , they’ve been losing, and are only willing to swing a deal to move an established starting pitcher - one of the rarest, most prized commodities in the game - for a plethora of young prospects to help cut costs and begin a revitalization. Those pieces are pretty well easy to target, too, which is why the likes of Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets saw their names in rumors at the July trade deadline, and why Chris Sale was an obvious trade target when the White Sox began tanking two years ago. Teams on a losing path trying to cash-in on their best trade chips prior to those players’ contracts running out is a managment strategy that’s basically timeless, and even one the Cincinnati Reds began to employ in that 2015 season when the last vestiges of the 2010-2013 winning stretch were shipped out.It was the shopping of Johnny Cueto at that point that’s become a focal point of this rebuild, as three years later the return the Reds received for shipping him to the Kansas City Royals looks less and less likely to truly help turn this club around. John Lamb is long gone, Brandon Finnegan and his shoulder issues have completely fallen off the radar, with Cody Reed now the one real hope that the Reds will get anything of value out of dealing the best pitcher they’ve had in a generation. To put a bow on this particular post, the Reds shopped Cueto hard at that July 2015 deadline before ultimately moving him to Kansas City, and one other club in particular - the Toronto Blue Jays - had serious eyes on adding him to their playoff push. The Reds asking price, though, was ultimately too high, as Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reported at the time. That’s because the Reds wanted young Marcus Stroman as the centerpiece of the deal. The 2012 1st round pick of the Blue Jays had torn his ACL in March of 2015 and was sidelined at the time, but that didn’t stop the Reds from asking about him. To that point, the then 24 year old had been dazzling in his big league time, the owner of a 15-6 record with a 3.31 ERA, 2.96 FIP, and impressive 3.79 K/BB in 157.2 IP across a season and change, backing up the prospect status that had Baseball Prospectus rank him at #27 overall in all baseball prior to 2014.The Blue Jays balked, Stroman went on to pitch in the playoffs for Toronto in both 2015 and 2016, and even posted a 5.7 bWAR 2017 season that led to an 8th place finish in the AL Cy Young Award voting. The tables Russell Wilson Jersey , though, have certainly begun to flip for Toronto since that failed 2015 Cueto trade, as while they’re no longer doing any winning, they’re also now sporting a roster devoid of the likes of Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion, or J.A. Happ, with Troy Tulowitzki’s injuries also keeping him out for the better part of two years. At 69-83, they’re a team on the cusp of turning things over to a youth movement, especially with the likes of top prospect Vlad Guerrero, Jr. ready to emerge in 2019.So, I’ve got to wonder if Stroman is the kind of addition the Reds might be looking long and hard at acquiring this winter. His upside is certainly a fit, for one. With team control for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons, he comes with enough team control to perhaps see the Reds turn the tables. And to top it off, we know for certain that a front office that had sincere interest in acquiring him just 3 years ago is still more or less populated with the same minds in charge now that were in charge of decision making then. The big question, I suppose, is whether Stroman is capable of being a front-line starter of enough quality for the Reds, one who would warrant surrendering some of the top prospects in the Cincinnati system. A quick stare at his abbreviated 2018 season and5.54 ERA this year would certainly suggest that’s not the case.Diving a bit deeper, though, and there’s still plenty to like from the player who had such a breakout 2017 season. The 3.09 ERA he posted in 201 IP in 2017 lined up with a 3.90 FIP, and his FIP in his rough and tumble 2018 sits at an identical 3.90. The velocity on his four-seam fastball did take a bit of a dip year over year from 93.3 mph to 92.4 mph, but that came with an actual increase in velocity on his cutter (up from 90.5 mph to 90.7 mph) and an increase in average velocity on his curveball (from 82.6 mph up to 83.1 mph). He did begin to reduce his usage of his fourseamer by some ~13% and slider by some ~7%, only using it on roughly 2/3rds of his pitches - with a distinct uptick in use for both his curveball and cutter - marking a fairly obvious difference in the way he approached hitters in 2018 Martin Perez Jersey , for some reason. The change in repertoire could be a chicken, or it could be an egg, however. As MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm reported a month ago when Stroman was removed due to another flare-up of a blister that haunted him for much of the 2018 season, Stroman wasn’t pitching the way he usually did in that particular start against the New York Yankees in part because of the massive blister on the index finger of his throwing hand. That start, by the way, resulted in Stroman getting pounded for 5 ER in just 4.0 IP, and he was sidelined for two full weeks before making what became his final start of the 2018 season - a 1.2 IP, 4 ER debacle against the Tampa Bay Rays before being shut down for the rest of the year to let his blister issues fully heal.In the 12 starts prior to that Yankees outing, he’d pitched to a 3.66 ERA in 71.1 IP, for what it’s worth.*******************************************************Who knows whether Stroman will actually be shopped by the Blue Jays. With two years of team control remaining and a solid raise on his arb-1 salary of $6.5 million due his way, he wouldn’t exactly be the cheapest acquisition for the Reds, either - though they’ve repeatedly emphasized that they’re willing to pump up payroll this offseason.Still, Stroman sits as one of the very few obvious names that fits the criteria of being potentially on the trade block, just like Syndergaard, deGrom, and Michael Fulmer in Detroit. And if you look solely on 2018 production alone, he might be one on whom the Reds could be conceivably buying low, despite the certainty that they’d have to surrender a solid package of prospects to facilitate the deal. If that deal didn’t include Nick Senzel - and I don’t think it would need to at all - perhaps Stroman is precisely the kind of player the Reds will be targeting this winter. At least, I sure as heck hope they finally do.
At some point Randal Grichuk Jersey , ann absurd notion, but it's coming. And Mike Trout may be the man to cash in.Heading into this winter, all eyes will be on Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.Harper is 25 years old and Machado is 26. Both are generational talents with sterling resumes. That said, neither has performed at peak level in his contract year.Harper has cracked 34 home runs but is hitting a ho-hum .246 for the Washington Nationals, who will miss the postseason.Machado is slashing .296/.366/.541 overall, but his average (.267) and OPS (.824) have declined since a trade-deadline swap from the Baltimore Orioles to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both players will get paid. Neither is likely to crack the $500 million threshold. What about Trout? You don't need his resume, but we'll supply it anyway. Between 2012 and today, he has made seven All-Star appearances, won a pair of American League MVP awards and amassed 63.7 WAR by FanGraphs' calculation. The next-highest WAR totals during that span belong to Andrew McCutchen (36.3) and Josh Donaldson (36.2). Trout is almost literally lapping the field. This year, he's launched 38 home runs and leads both leagues with a 1.093 OPS.Oh, and the guy celebrated his 27th birthday on August 7. Technically he's just entering his prime.Mike Stone/Associated PressOK, Trout is great. That's not news to anybody. How does his greatness translate to a $500 million payday?Let's turn to Fancred's Jon Heyman Jose Bautista Jersey , who reported that, "The Angels are expected to try again to make Mike Trout a lifetime Angel when they discuss a contract this winter, and one rival agent suggested Trout's agent would be wise to wait until free agents Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are signed to provide the floor."Yes, you read that right. Harper and Machado will be the floor. The Halos will pay Trout $33.25 million in 2019 and 2020. Barring a shocking trade, he'll remain in Anaheim for the next two seasons. After that, he could become the most coveted free agent in baseball history. Or, the Angels could lock him up for the long haul.In March 2014, Trout inked a six-year, $144.5 million extension with the Angels. It was a massive pact for a player who, at the time, had only a pair of full big league campaigns under his belt.It also displayed Trout's loyalty to the franchise that drafted him 25th overall in 2009.Will that loyalty lead him to another, larger http://www.bluejaysfanproshop.com/authentic-curtis-granderson-jersey , lifetime deal in the $500M range?Maybe. Here's the fly in the ointment: Trout has the hardware and individual accolades but doesn't have postseason success.Ted S. Warren/Associated PressTrout has played in a scant three playoff games, all losses. In 12 at-bats on the game's brightest stage, he's managed just a single hit plus three walks. In typical Trout fashion, the hit was a home run, but that's still a minuscule sample size."Obviously I want to win," Trout said recently, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. "It's not a good feeling being in early September and you're out of it. It's definitely in the back of my mind, but you've got to trust the front office."The Angels made moves last winter. Most notably, they signed two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, who has been derailed by elbow problems but has displayed tantalizing power and pitching prowess this season.Despite the Angels' futility, there is a world where Trout sticks with them and finally makes a run.MLB might wish he'd go to a more high-profile club; up the I-5 freeway to the Los Angeles Dodgers or across the country to the New York Yankees. Earlier this season, Commissioner Rob Manfred all but said Trout was squandering his opportunity as the game's pre-eminent star. That's never been Trout's style Marcus Stroman Jersey , however. He's not flashy. He doesn't covet the spotlight. The Angels seem prepared to offer him untold riches to keep wearing their uniform. And nothing in Trout's brilliant, understated career indicates he'd say no.It's silly to suggest a player could humbly accept a half-billion dollars. A look at the three-game set coming up in Tampa Bay"Diego Castillo is the right-handed counterpart to Alvarado, and while he’s not quite as good he’s still very scary. Castillo isn’t quite the strikeout machine that Alvarado can be, but he has better stuff than his current 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings would indicate. He also is much better with his control. His ERA is not 0.00 like Alvarado’s, but instead 0.82. What a bum.InjuriesBlake Snell was supposed to start Friday’s game, but instead he’s in the running for weirdest injury of 2019. WASHINGTON (AP) — onals was postponed because of rain and rescheduled for Thursday at 4:05 p.m.The decision was announced three hours after the scheduled 1:35 p.m. start time. Thursday is the teams’ only remaining mutual day off.Rain fell at Nationals Park throughout the weekend. The start of Friday’s game was delayed 1 hour Mike Trout Jersey , 21 minutes. The rain returned with two outs in the top of the second inning and play was stopped. The game was postponed after a wait of 2 hours, 55 minutes when the rain had stopped.Saturday became a doubleheader that was supposed to start at 3:05 p.m. but didn’t get underway until 5 p.m. A between-games ceremony honoring former National Jason Werth and another rain delay in the nightcap led to 1:44 a.m. conclusion as Washington swept the Cubs.Chicago began Sunday with a 2½-game lead in the NL Central while Washington was 7½ games behind Atlanta in the NL East. The Cubs, in the midst of 23 games in 23 days, finished a four-city road trip 5-5.“So many (games) in a row, the four cities, the weather, this is the kind of stuff that can actually make you better as you move forward,” manager Joe Maddon said. “As long as nobody’s crying and complaining, these are those things that can make you stronger.”Washington snapped a three-game skid with Saturday’s sweep, which was led by their ace hurler and all-star slugger. After Max Scherzer tossed a complete game in the opener, Bryce Harper’s two-run homer capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning of the nightcap. The Nationals also got a homer from Anthony Rendon and key relief work from Sean Doolittle and Greg Holland.“The best way I could describe it is perseverance,” manager Dave Martinez said. “For those guys to sit there all day … and then go out there and do what they do, it’s a testament to what kind of team we have.”THE WAIT IS OVERCubs OF Terrance Gore singled off Scherzer in the opener Saturday for his first career hit in his 55th game. With Derek Jeter’s Marlins clearly in full rebuild, they were finally able to reach a deal to trade their last truly valuable major league trade chip by sending catcher J.T. It’s a hefty haul, but the deal undoubtedly makes them much better for the time being.Earlier in the offseason, the Phillies had been as low as +1600 to win the World Series, but that number had improved to +1200 before the trade thanks to Bryce Harper and Manny Machado rumors.Following the deal, they moved to +1000 鈥?second in the National League behind the Dodgers at +800. If they failed to acquire Realmuto or either mega free agent, you’d have likely seen their odds drop back to the +1600 range. The Marlins remained a 150-1 longshot following the trade.Realmuto is not a household name, at least in most households, but you better believe he’s one of the best catchers in baseball?if not the best. surgery and out for the season. New York Yankees ace Luis Severino is shut down Sergio Romo Jersey , too — at least through opening day.Hours after Severino stopped warming up in the bullpen because of an inflamed right shoulder, the Royals announced more damaging news Tuesday: Perez will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, keeping the six-time All-Star off the field for the entire year.Perez hurt the elbow during a workout last week and said over the weekend that he was harboring a slim hope he might be able to play through it. Instead, he is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday.“There was nothing that can prepare us for this. There was no information we had that led us this direction,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “Salvy was having no issues. He’s asymptomatic. He has wear and tear, just like any 28-year-old catcher who’s been squatting and catching since he was 12 years old. There was no warning sign or anything like that.”Perez hit just .235 last season but had 27 homers and 80 RBIs while providing a solid and calming presence behind the plate. The MVP of the 2015 World Series was being counted upon to help the rebuilding Royals take the steps necessary to return to the playoffs, particularly when it came to their young but promising rotation. Now, Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria are expected to share time behind the plate. The Yankees will rework their rotation while Severino recovers. He was loosening up for his first spring training start when he felt something wrong as he threw his first slider. He won’t throw for two weeks, manager Aaron Boone said after a 5-1 win over Atlanta.“Obviously, anytime a starting pitcher and a guy like Sevie walks off while he’s warming up to start a game, you always get worried and concerned about that,” Boone said. “But it sounds like the shoulder is pretty clean, it’s just the inflammation issue. So if that’s the case, then hopefully two weeks is something that will do the trick, then he can start ramping back up with his throwing program, but we’ll re-evaluate it also at the same time.”The Yankees open at home on March 28 against Baltimore.Masahiro Tanaka http://www.raysfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , James Paxton, CC Sabathia and J.A. That did not happen, as Smith struggled badly the first month and a half of the season and it ended up sinking a lot of his total numbers. I’m not sure how much of it was altering his swing to try to produce more lift http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , but even after June his ISO was about .130, which will not get it done at the MLB level at his position. Tools: Hit 45/60, Power 40/55, Speed 40, Defense 45/55Smith can generate plus exit velocity, but at the same time he has problems keeping the ball off the ground. I still believe the hit tool can project to a plus tool over time because of his ability to recognize what is and what isn’t strikes. Smith is also very good avoiding strikeouts, unfortunately to a fault at times where he swings at a borderline at best pitch and hits into an out on a ball in play vs. a strikeout. I think with better in zone recognition and more LD/FB contact that the power will also improve, he hit 13 HR in a college season so there is definitely room for improvement. His lack of foot speed limits him to 1B defensively, although that position is not blocked long term and Smith can handle the position fine with above average defense potential there. Upside: Smith has the upside of an above average regular at 1B, assuming the issues he has at the plate are fixed. He’ll need to hit for more power and probably produce about a 110-115 wRC+ at the plate to get to the average regular assuming that baserunning and defense (including position runs) are about 5 runs below average. His strong batting eye at the plate and ability to recognize that a pitch is not a strike quickly will allow him to put up solid walk rates for an OBP skill. If the power is merely average, then to produce solid numbers at the plate he’ll have to show a BABIP skill. Risk: The biggest risk is Smith becomes too stubborn to alter his approach for his own good. As I mentioned before, Smith hates striking out to a fault where he’ll put a borderline pitch into play for an out. If he takes a borderline pitch and it’s called against him, I’m not going to get too upset over that.Likely 2019 Assignment: I’d like to see him get another look at Visalia, not necessarily the full season but long enough that he’s showing progress with his swing and hitting more fly balls and extra base hits (I’d like to see an XBH of 8-9% at least). However, my gut tells me the team is going to rush him to AA Mookie Wilson Jersey , where I think he could possibly get exposed by pitchers that know his tendencies. If he shows improvement in the BABIP and power department (I know he’s capable of doing better than what he did in 2018 in those two aspects), then it’s back on the fast track to the majors for Smith. ETA: 2020 Season TORONTO (AP) — Kendrys Morales kept up his hot hitting and sent the Baltimore Orioles south of the border with another loss in Canada.Morales homered for the fourth consecutive game, Thomas Pannone and two relievers combined on a two-hitter and the Blue Jays beat Baltimore 6-0 on Wednesday, completing a 10-game season sweep of the Orioles in Toronto.“A lot of those games have been close,” Baltimore right-hander David Hess said of his team’s winless record in Toronto. “They just kind of found ways that we haven’t so far to pull out a win.”Devon Travis had a three-run shot in the eighth inning as the Blue Jays blew open the game with a five-run outburst against Miguel Castro, who uncorked three wild pitches and didn’t retire any of the five batters he faced.Morales hit a two-out drive off Hess (2-8) in the seventh, his fifth home run in the past four games and 19th of the season.“He really regrouped after that slow start and he’s been steady,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Morales, who hit .178 in April.Making his first major league start after four relief appearances, the left-handed Pannone (1-0) pitched six no-hit innings before Baltimore’s Trey Mancini reached on a ground-ball single to begin the seventh.“I didn’t really hold myself to any expectations,” Pannone said. “Just wanted to execute a good game plan and give my team a chance to win and I feel like I did that today.”Mancini advanced to third when left fielder Teoscar Hernandez was charged with an error on Adam Jones’ liner, but Pannone escaped unscathed by getting Tim Beckham and Craig Gentry to ground out before Renato Nunez popped up.Orioles manager Buck Showalter criticized his team’s offensive approach in the inning.“We had second and third and nobody out and you’re getting in that mode of trying to hit a three-run homer instead of getting the run across,” Showalter said.Blue Jays center fielder Randal Grichuk made a sensational diving catch to retire Orioles catcher Austin Wynns for the first out of the sixth. Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins followed with a bunt, but Pannone pounced on the ball and made the throw to first.Gibbons used the word “sneaky” to describe Pannone’s stuff.“That ball jumps on you,” Gibbons said. “He did a hell of a job.”Baltimore put runners at first and second with two outs against Ryan Tepera in the top of the eighth http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , but right fielder Billy McKinney made a sliding catch on Mancini’s sinking liner to retire the side. Joe Biagini struck out the side in the ninth.Hess was perfect through four innings. Morales reached on a ground-ball single through the shift to begin the fifth.Hess allowed one run and three hits and set career-highs with seven strikeouts in seven innings.“He commanded the ball down in the zone,” Showalter said. “You could tell he had an idea about where the ball was going and what he was trying to do.”Hess is 0-7 since his most recent win, May 25 at Tampa Bay.Baltimore has lost four straight and 11 of 13. He considers it a perfect fit.“The fans, this organization in general, expect winning,” Bogaerts said. “I know my teammates know how much I love winning regardless if it’s cards, baseball, dominoes, I don’t care, I just enjoy winning. They know that about me.”Boston’s shortstop signed a $120 million, six-year contract covering 2020-25, a deal that raises his guarantee to $132 million over seven seasons. The sides agreed to terms Sunday night and made it official on Monday, when Boston was set to open a four-game road series against the Oakland Athletics.“I’ve won two rings with this organization. The group we had last year and the group we have this year, it goes beyond just regular guys. It’s a real family http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-marcell-ozuna-jersey ,” he said prior to the series opener at Oakland. “I’m really blessed, I’m really blessed to have a great group of guys like that behind me and pushing me to become better.”Bogaerts agreed in January to a $12 million, one-year deal. His new deal pays $20 million annually and includes a $20 million option for 2026 that becomes guaranteed if he has 535 plate appearances in 2025 and is healthy at the end of the season. He gains a full no-trade provision after seven years of major league service and is on track to reach that after the 2020 season.Conversations about a new contract went throughout the offseason.“Alex Cora, you can stop leaving those dirty messages on my phone about getting this done,” quipped agent Scott Boras to the Red Sox manager.Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said there were conversations he considered optimistic during spring training “and some conversations I didn’t think were optimistic at the time.”Bogaerts’ desire to be in Boston for the long haul was “influential” in getting this done, said Dombrowksi, who still wasn’t sure on opening day what direction this would go.“Absolutely thrilled to have Bogey sign with us for an extended period,” Dombrowksi said. “Young player that came through the organization, very talented, one of the top players in the game of baseball in my opinion in today’s game. But really what the foundation of an organization is all about, having somebody who we sign and then develop and has a chance to remain here.”Bogaerts hit .288 last year and set career bests with 23 homers and 103 RBIs while helping the Red Sox win a franchise-record 108 games in the regular season and a World Series championship.Reigning AL MVP Mookie Betts is eligible for salary arbitration after this season and for free agency after 2020, when he will be just 28. Buehler has given up two earned runs or fewer in six consecutive starts, going 2-0 in five August turns with a 1.53 ERA.Buehler, who has yet to face the Diamondbacks in his young career, might be the Dodgers’ least experienced starter, but the club is feeling completely confident about things after the last two games. The Dodgers were 4 1/2 games out of first place after a loss Aug. 22, but have gone 7-1 in their last eight games to make up the ground.“Not surprised, very impressed Red Schoendienst Jersey , and I think the noise outside, and the things that were being said, our guys didn’t waver,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Each day, to their credit, they focus on each game and aren’t worried about the other clubs and how they played.”The Diamondbacks had owned the Dodgers going back to late August 2017. They finished the 2017 regular season with six consecutive victories over the Dodgers, and although Los Angeles won a postseason series, Arizona opened 2018 by going 7-1 in the first eight games of the matchup.Even in the last two games, the Diamondbacks were in control until some late-inning Dodgers heroics. Before Kemp’s home run Saturday, Enrique Hernandez and Justin Turner hit home runs to win Friday’s game.On Friday, Diamondbacks manager Torry Lovullo appeared to leave starter Zack Greinke in the game too long. On Saturday, starter Patrick Corbin went only five innings, even though he had not allowed a run to score.“It’s easy to sit right now and say Enos Slaughter Jersey , knowing what the results are, that we would do it differently,” Lovullo said after Friday’s game, according to the Arizona Republic. “Of course, I would have done it differently had I known what the outcome was.”He did do things differently Saturday, only he got the same results.Up next for the Diamondbacks is right-hander Clay Buchholz (7-2, 2.07), who hasn’t allowed a run in his last 15 innings. He has a 0.39 ERA in his last three starts and a 1.53 ERA in his last nine outings.Buchholz’s only start against the Dodgers came in 2010, and he went 6 2/3 scoreless innings as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

The Mariners trail the Oakland Athletics by 4.5 games for the second and final wild-card berth, and they will send 28-year-old Nicaraguan Erasmo Ramirez (0-2, 5.49 ERA) to the hill in hopes of winning the series opener. While his numbers do not look good overall on paper, Ramirez has pitched well in his last two starts and allowed just one run and seven hits in 10 innings, with Seattle winning both games against the Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers. Why the Diamondbacks can pay on the MLB linesArizona will have a definitive edge in the pitching matchup with Zack Godley (13-6, 4.44 ERA) toeing the rubber at home. The 28-year-old has performed much better at Chase Field than he has on the road, going 6-2 there with a 3.33 ERA.In the previous three seasons Rougned Odor Jersey , Godley was a better pitcher away from home, so he seems to have turned things around. The Rockies, who defeated the Padres 4-2 on Saturday night after losing two straight against the division cellar-dwellers, are a half-game back and in third in the division at 73-62.If the Rockies defeat the Padres on Sunday to gain a split of their four-game series http://www.rangersfanproshop.com/authentic-matt-moore-jersey , Colorado will be second in the National League West, and still a half-game off the lead.Article continues below ...If the Rockies lose for the third time in four games to the Padres, they will remain in third, but slip to 1 1/2 games off the lead with 26 games to play. The Rockies get a chance to split after D.J. LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado ended some dubious streaks for the offense. LeMahieu’s homer ended Colorado’s 21-inning scoreless streak and a run of 28 innings without an extra-base hit. Arenado’s hit ended a career-worst 0-for-19 skid and snapped Colorado’s stretch without consecutive hits at 118 at-bats.“The way we’ve hit the last two days, it felt like we hadn’t won in, like, a month,” LeMahieu said. “When we can get that lead early like that, it was a good feeling, for sure.”Looking forward, the future appears bright for the Rockies. After Sunday, they return to Coors Field to open a 10-game homestand Monday afternoon against the Giants. Overall Russell Wilson Jersey , 17 of the Rockies’ final 26 games will be played in the rarified air of Denver, where they are 34-30.Colorado on Sunday will send left-hander Kyle Freeland (12-7, 2.90 ERA) out against Padres rookie right-hander Jacob Nix (2-2, 4.05), who will be facing the Rockies for the second time in his fifth major league start. The 25-year-old Freeland has the lowest ERA among the Rockies starters as well as the lowest opponents’ batting average (.236) and the lowest WHIP (1.24). Freeland also leads the Rockies with 164 1/3 innings pitched and will be making his team-leading 28th start.Freeland also ranks among the National League leaders in two categories that won’t help him Sunday. He ranks fourth in the league in home ERA with a 2.27 mark, which is doubly impressive since it was compiled at Coors Field. And he ranks fourth in the league with a 2.50 ERA in night games.Freeland is 7-2 in 12 starts at home this season while going 5-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 15 starts on the road.Freeland is also finishing the season strong. He was 3-1 in August with a 2.15 ERA in six starts, striking out 42 in 37 2/3 innings with 15 walks and a .230 opponents’ batting average. He is 6-1 with a 2.16 ERA over his last 13 starts with the Rockies going 11-2.Freeland is 1-2 with a 3.94 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Padres. He is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three previous games (two starts) at Petco Park.Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Nix is coming off his best start. Tuesday night at Petco Park, Nix threw 8 1/3 shutout innings against Seattle before Nelson Cruz homered. Nix throws to contact. He needed only 79 pitches (58 strikes) while allowing eight hits without issuing a walk or recording a strikeout. He lowered his ERA from 6.17 to 4.05 on Tuesday. His previous start was against the Rockies at Coors Field on Aug. 22 when he allowed three runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings. Nix has issued only five walks in 20 innings and only one in his last 13 1/3.
NEW YORK (AP) —alf the 44 runs scored by the champion Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers came across the plate on home runs. That’s the second-highest percentage in baseball history Dave Dravecky Jersey , according to the Elias Sports Bureau, behind only last year’s 57.4 percent. There were 109 strikeouts and 76 hits, a 1.43 ratio that was the second-highest behind 1.48 in 2012. That followed the first regular season in major league history with more strikeouts than hits and with the lowest overall batting average since 1972 — the year before the start of the designated hitter.Discussion of possible rule changes to increase action will dominate the offseason, along with speculation about a free agent market that includes Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and Josh Donaldson, and possibly David Price and Clayton Kershaw if they opt out of their contracts.“What we try to do is pay attention over the course of the season,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said last week, “think about what we’ve learned during the postseason and see whether we may need to make some change in response to what we’re seeing.”Analytics have transformed the sport, from offense-suffocating shifts to shortening starting pitchers’ time on the mound and constantly rotating relievers from the major leagues to the minors in order to have an array of fresh bullpen arms each game.“I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about whether analytics are a good thing or a bad thing, and the reason for that is they are a real thing,” Manfred said. “We have them. They’re going to continue to use them. There’s nothing you can do to stop people from thinking about the game, however the heck it is they want to think about the game.”Discussion will start next week http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , when general managers meet in Carlsbad, California. Owners gather Nov. 14-15 in Atlanta, and the major offseason get-together will be the winter meetings at Las Vegas from Dec. 10-13.Manfred and players’ association head Tony Clark already have been talking — they appeared together at a World Series news conference last weekend, which would have been unimaginable a year ago given the tension between management and players. Both sides are concerned about a 4 percent attendance drop that left the major league average below 30,000 for the first time since 2003. Six ballparks set their record lows and 17 of 30 experienced drops, partly because of historically bad weather that caused 54 postponements, the most since 1989.Management wanted to introduce a pitch clock at the major league level in an effort to speed the pace of games but players refused to agree, and Major League Baseball backed off a threat to impose one over the union’s objections. Instead, a more modest change restricted the amount of mound visits by players and coaches without pitching changes. The average time of a nine-inning game dropped to 3 hours, 44 seconds during the regular season from 3:05:11 for last season, and mound visits without pitching changes fell to 4.01 from 7.41.That was swift compared with October. Nine-inning games averaged 3:30 in the World Series, up from 3:16 last year Brandon Belt Jersey , and 3:35 throughout the postseason, an increase from 3:29.And that was with a drop on mound conferences, which fell to an average of 6.6 in the postseason from 11.2 and to 6.4 in the World Series from 19.0.Talk on rule changes will be conducted as the union watches free-agent negotiations unfold. Last offseason had an unusually slow market that led to player anger. Among the 166 players who exercised the right to become free agents after the World Series, exactly half of the 140 agreements reached were finalized after the start of spring training workouts on Feb. 14.Late deals did make a difference: Boston agreed Feb. 19 to a $110 million, five-year contract with J.D. Martinez, who went on the lead the major leagues with 130 RBIs and homered Sunday night as the Red Sox won Game 5 to finish their fourth World Series title in 15 seasons. The first 145 free agents hit the market Monday, and about 30 more may follow this week depending on option decisions. Bidding figures to be more vigorous this offseason because of higher quality among the free agents. But analytics have directed many teams to be more reticent about lengthy deals with older players, which could lead to renewed tension. HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros entered the AL Championship Series aching.Jose Altuve was playing on just one good knee, Carlos Correa’s back was never right and Lance McCullers was pitching through an injury that will likely require surgery. Now the Astros are hurting even worse, done after losing four straight to the Red Sox to end their bid to repeat as champions.“The heart of this team really (is) unparalleled,” said ace Justin Verlander, whose big season helped the Astros go deep in the playoffs. “We had guys playing through so much. I’m not going to name anyone specifically http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , but I think you could see some of it on the field and how hard guys were grinding trying to help us win.”It was a disappointing end for the Astros to a stellar year in which they won a franchise-record 103 games to capture the AL West for a second straight season. The Astros had no trouble in the division series, sweeping the Cleveland Indians to set up a meeting with the 108-win Red Sox.The Astros won Game 1, before the Red Sox took over, winning one game in Boston before taking all three games in Houston to reach the World Series for the first time since 2013.“We’ll learn from it and everyone in here will have a little bit of an edge to play with it (will) be a chip on their shoulder knowing that we believe we should have been back-to-back champions,” third baseman Alex Bregman said. “And I know every day when I wake up and the rest of these guys wake up during the offseason, there will be one thing on their mind, and that’ll be working toward winning it next year.”Correa remained in the dugout after the last out on Thursday night, staring onto the field as the Red Sox celebrated on the Astros’ home field after a 4-1 win.“I was just thinking that I don’t want to ever feel this feeling again of losing,” he said. “It’s just devasting to lose when we know what kind of team we have.”It was a year where Bregman led Houston’s offense by posting career highs in batting average (.286), homers (31), RBIs (103) and doubles (51), while Altuve struggled for most of the second half with right knee injury. The reigning AL MVP returned from the first stint of his career on the disabled list on Aug. 21 http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , but never fully recovered from the injury. It got so bad in the ALCS that the six-time All-Star second baseman couldn’t play defense and served as Houston’s designated hitter for the last three games.“It’s all about heart with him,” manager AJ Hinch said. “He is such a great example of what’s right … I wish you guys knew what he had to go through to play every day and get himself prepared and then contribute and do well.”Correa got better late in the series and had three hits in Game 4 but admitted before the series that his back hurt so bad sometimes that it was difficult to walk. He is confident that extended rest will clear up the problem and that he’ll be ready to go for next season. The same can’t be said for McCullers, a right-hander who started and pitched in relief for the Astros this season. The 25-year-old pitched just four times in the regular season after July 29 as he dealt with what the team called discomfort in his right elbow.McCullers wouldn’t provide specifics on his injury on Thursday night, but he wouldn’t deny that he’s going to need surgery on his elbow.“We’re going to figure all that stuff out,” he said. “I’m pretty banged up … so that’s going to be something that down the road in the next couple of days or couple of weeks we’ll figure out.”Now the Astros will face an offseason with several questions about their roster with a list of potential free agents including pitchers Charlie Morton and Dallas Keuchel, catchers Brian McCann and Martin Maldonado, and all-purpose player Marwin Gonzalez.Keuchel, the 2015 Cy Young Award winner, who is one of the longest tenured Astros after debuting in 2012 said he’d like to return but is disappointed that the team hadn’t tried to negotiate with him sooner.“There’s been seven years where there could have been extension talks, but one thing or another it just hasn’t come to a head,” he said. “But I’d like to be in this locker next year … it’s just going to be a weird feeling not knowing what’s next.”
ATLANTA (AP) —is memorable day http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , even that went right.Pinch-runner Adam Duvall scored the tiebreaking run on a delayed dash from third base and Flowers hit a two-run homer in Atlanta’s four-run eighth inning as the Braves beat Tampa Bay 9-5 on Tuesday night to snap the Rays’ eight-game winning streak.Flowers’ homer came after he agreed to a contract extension that could keep him in Atlanta through the 2020 season.“It was a pretty good day,” Flowers said. “All in all, it wasn’t too bad.”The homer was Atlanta’s sixth by pinch-hitters this season, tied for the most in the majors. Asked if he had become more comfortable as a pinch-hitter, Flowers said, “Not a bit, no.”Chaz Roe (1-3) walked Kurt Suzuki to open the eighth. Suzuki advanced to third on Ozzie Albies’ third hit, a double to the right-field corner.Duvall, running for Suzuki, initially remained at third base on Dansby Swanson’s groundout to second. When first baseman Jake Bauers looked to possibly throw to second, where Albies was standing off the bag, Duvall took off in a desperate sprint for the plate.Home plate umpire Chad Fairchild called Duvall safe on his slide under the tag of catcher Michael Perez, beating Bauers’ throw. A video review lasting 1 minute, 45 seconds Devin Mesoraco Jersey , confirmed the call.Bauers said he looked to second base because he thought Duvall was running on contact and already had scored. Then Bauers said he heard third baseman Matt Duffy yelling for him to throw to Perez.“I did my best to throw it home and get him,” Bauers said. “Obviously he snuck in.”Flowers’ homer landed in the Rays’ bullpen behind the left-field wall. Ender Inciarte, who drove in two runs on four hits, added another homer to center off Andrew Kittredge. The Rays suffered their first loss since Aug. 18 at Boston.“It just means we have to start again,” said Brandon Lowe, who hit his first homer, a two-run shot , in the sixth. “Losing stinks but now you can start another winning streak.”Brad Brach (2-3) recorded the final out in the eighth. The Rays loaded the bases off A.J. Minter with two outs in the ninth. Willy Adames’ groundout ended the game, and first-place Atlanta moved 4½ games ahead of Philadelphia in the NL East.Tampa Bay trailed 5-2 before Adames’ single off Jonny Venters in the eighth drove in Tommy Pham from second for a 5-5 tie. Nick Markakis doubled in two runs in Atlanta’s four-run fifth inning.Braves starter Julio Teheran gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.TRAINER’S ROOMRays: OF Mallex Smith (viral infection) worked out at Tropicana Field after being released from the hospital Sunday. There is no timetable for his return to the team.Braves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino, who has been out since July 14 while on the DL for the second time this season with right shoulder inflammation, threw in the bullpen. Manager Brian Snitker said Vizcaino is “feeling good now” but needs to appear in a minor league rehab game before more is known about his outlook for this season.THE OPENERRays opener Ryne Stanek pitched a scoreless first inning before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the second. Yonny Chirinos allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks in five innings.NEW DEALThe 32-year-old Flowers agreed to a $4 million contract for 2019 and a $6 million club option, with a $2 million buyout http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , for 2020.ERRORS HURTThe Rays led 2-1 before Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson opened the fifth with singles off the gloves of second baseman Joey Wendle and Duffy, respectively. Teheran’s bunt was mishandled by Bauers for an error and then picked up by Duffy, who threw low to first for another error, allowing Albies to score the tying run.UP NEXTRays: RHP Diego Castillo (3-2, 3.23 ERA) is expected to make only his third start when the two-game series concludes on Wednesday night. He has appeared in 30 games in relief.Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (11-6, 3.57) will make his second start of the season against the Rays. He threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 win on May 8 at Tampa Bay. SEATTLE (AP) — Edgar Martinez spent last week on the East Coast, being honored among the latest electees to the Baseball Hall of Fame thousands of miles from the place he called home for his entire career. The Seattle Mariners couldn’t wait to celebrate Martinez in the Pacific Northwest.“Today is a great day,” Mariners’ chairman emeritus John Ellis said. “We finally have him here.”After a whirlwind of commitments elsewhere, the standout designated hitter was back in Seattle on Tuesday, walking into T-Mobile Park on a red carpet to be feted by the only franchise he ever played for. It was a celebration the Mariners had been hoping to have for the past 10 years. Martinez was in his final year of eligibility when the Baseball Writers’ Association of America finally gave him the necessary votes for enshrinement.Martinez and his family walked into a crowd of Mariners employees cheering the second player whose plaque in Cooperstown will have a Mariners hat, joining Ken Griffey Jr. Martinez is enjoying the experience even if he’s not one to get emotional, for now.“My personality is kind of mellow. I don’t celebrate a lot. It’s just my personality,” Martinez said. “But I’ve been able to enjoy friends, ex-teammates Pedro Martinez Jersey , people I know, family members, that part has been a lot of fun. But not a lot of celebration.”Martinez was elected last week with 85.4 percent of the vote — 75 percent is required for induction. That marked a remarkable turnaround, climbing in his final five years of eligibility after being an afterthought on the ballot early on.It was a collective effort to get him there. The Mariners organization worked hard publicizing his worthiness, die-hard fans pushed for him on social media, and younger voters made a case for the designated hitter with the help of baseball’s new-age analytics.“It took a long time for the writers to give more credit to the DH. I think now that probably (will) change,” Martinez said. “I think metrics they look at today, that will also change writers what they think about it. I understood their opinion the whole time … and kind of accepted that a long time ago. But the good thing is I got the honor to be elected, and I think that’s going to change the view from writers now.”Tuesday’s event is just the start of what is expected to be a season-long celebration by the organization. Aside from the induction in July, the Mariners are holding a weekend of events in honor of Martinez in August. Still unannounced is whether there will be a statue going up somewhere around the stadium to join the club’s other two Hall of Fame members: Griffey and longtime broadcaster Dave Niehaus.Martinez said he’s still going through messages from friends and former teammates who reached out after the election results were announced.Martinez hasn’t started thinking about his induction speech yet, but joked that he wanted to bat leadoff and get out of the way, let Mariano Rivera go last because he was a closer. He’s expected to visit Cooperstown sometime in the next couple of months to get a better idea of what to expect when his July induction arrives.“I’m pretty sure I’m going to be nervous about it. The good thing is I have a lot of time to get ready for that,” he said.
GOODYEAR Sean Rodriguez Jersey , Ariz. (AP) — eir resurgence.Following an offseason that saw a lot of turnover for the last-place Reds, they’re beginning this year with Schebler in center field, taking over after the departure of Billy Hamilton.Schebler doesn’t have Hamilton’s range or speed. Few players do.But Schebler has played 49 games at the spot over the last three seasons. New manager David Bell has given Schebler the job, eager to see it he can make the transition from right field — by far his most familiar spot — and give Yaisel Puig a chance to settle in somewhere else in the outfield.“Schebler is going to play all over this spring, but I’m interested in seeing him in center field,” Bell said. “It’s valuable that he can play all three positions in the outfield. There’s no question he can play at this level.”The question is how the Reds’ new components fit together. They let Hamilton leave after years of trying unsuccessfully to improve his hitting. They got Puig and outfielder Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade that provided Bell with several new options.“It is kind of like going to a new school,” Schebler said. “The first couple of days I was meeting people for the first time. It was like you’re in a brand new clubhouse. You’ve kind of seen them play. You wonder what they’re like.”The Reds got the 28-year-old Schebler from the Dodgers along with shortstop Jose Peraza after the 2015 season as part of a three-team trade that sent Todd Frazier to the White Sox. During his time in LA’s farm system, Schebler got to know starter Alex Wood, who came to the Reds as part of the deal for Puig and Kemp. All the new players have brought as sense of optimism to a team that has lost at least 94 games for four straight seasons.“There is a lot of energy here,” Schebler said.Injuries have slowed Schebler the last two seasons. He missed 43 games last year with two stints on the disabled list. He suffered a bruised right elbow when hit by Sean Doolittle’s pitch in April. He sprained his right shoulder when he ran into the outfield wall in July. He batted .255 with 17 homers and 49 RBIs.“He has the ability to do a lot of damage,” Bell said. “We see him as a big part of the team.”The Reds don’t have a prototypical leader off hitter. They spent four seasons trying to get Hamilton to fill that role, without success. Schebler hasn’t stolen more than five bases in a season. Outfielder Jesse Winker didn’t steal a base in 89 games last season Felipe Vazquez Jersey , but he batted first Monday in a game against the Cubs.Given all the last-place finishes in recent years, players are willing to try new things under the new manager.“We’re willing to sacrifice all the individual stuff just to win,” Schebler said.Notes: RHP Sonny Gray will throw batting practice on Tuesday. He developed a sore elbow and had to take time off early in camp. He threw in the bullpen over the weekend without problem. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels celebrated Jose Briceno’s extra-inning homer with the frenzied enthusiasm of a team barreling toward the playoffs, not a team that needs a six-game winning streak this week just to finish at .500.Although the Angels are staying home for yet another October, they’re looking to build for next season with small successes — and big celebrations, apparently.Briceno delivered a pinch-hit homer leading off the 11th inning, and the Angels snapped their five-game skid with a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night.Shohei Ohtani hit his 21st homer in the first inning and Michael Hermosillo added his first career homer as the Angels opened the final homestand of their fourth consecutive season out of the playoffs. After Taylor Cole (3-2) retired the Rangers in the 11th, Briceno drilled an 0-2 pitch from Matt Moore (3-8) to center for his fifth career homer. It was the Angels’ first walk-off homer by a pinch-hitter since Scott Spiezio did it in 2000.After improving to 76-81, the Angels were ready to party: Briceno’s teammates ripped his jersey off his back, tore his undershirt and repeatedly pelted him with rosin and liquids when he reached home plate.“Yeah, I didn’t know what was going on around me http://www.piratesfanproshop.com/authentic-josh-bell-jersey , so I just tried to close my eyes,” Briceno said with a grin. After a 1-5 road trip that included four straight humiliating blowout losses, the Angels returned home with a four-homer performance and a strong start from Felix Pena. The 28-year-old former Cubs reliever yielded five hits over seven innings and struck out six, continuing his improbable rise as a starter in the Angels’ injury-plagued rotation by matching the longest appearance of his career.Angels rookie Ty Buttrey was one out away from his fifth career save, but after Ronald Guzman doubled with two outs in the ninth, pinch-runner Delino DeShields scored the tying run on pinch-hitter Elvis Andrus‘ single to left.Guzman and Jurickson Profar homered for the Rangers, who opened their season-ending road trip with their sixth loss in eight games.“I thought it was a really well-played game,” Rangers interim manager Don Wakamatsu said. “We talked about playing throughout the rest of the season hard, with some energy, with some personality. We’ve got a lot of bright spots.”Adrian Sampson yielded five hits and four runs while pitching into the sixth for Texas. Two batters after Jefry Marte hit his first homer since Aug. 21 in the fourth inning, Hermosillo got his first career homer — and a big hug from Mike Trout on his way back to the dugout — in his 28th game with the Angels. The 23-year-old outfield prospect made his big-league debut in May, and he said his father already laid claim to his first home run ball in a fortuitously timed text message shortly before this game.Rougned Odor singled in the sixth and scored when Profar’s 19th homer barely cleared the wall in right.Marte was hit by a pitch from Sampson leading off the sixth. He advanced on a balk and a groundout before scoring the go-ahead run on Connor Sadzeck’s wild pitch.NUMBER 21Ohtani hit a 428-foot shot to right field in the first inning Willie Stargell Jersey , interrupting a 3-for-22 slump with another superlative blast by the Angels’ two-way sensation. He has five homers while batting .327 against Texas this season. He also hit into two double plays and struck out, but his 21 homers are fourth-most among AL rookies.FREE PASSESTrout went 1 for 3 with two strikeouts, but drew his 116th and 117th walks of the season to set a franchise record, surpassing his mark in 2016.SCIOSCIA’S FUTUREBefore the game, Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the team-owned radio station that he would like to manage again next year. Scioscia is finishing his 19th season in the Angels’ dugout, and his contract expires this year. He has been widely expected to step down when the season concludes, but Scioscia sounded open to returning or to managing elsewhere in the majors.TRAINER’S ROOMAngels: Andrelton Simmons wasn’t in the starting lineup due to a sore knee, but he worked out on the field. The star shortstop landed awkwardly while fielding Sunday in Houston. … LF Justin Upton got a rest day.UP NEXTRangers: Yovani Gallardo (8-6, 6.59 ERA) is 1-5 in his last seven starts, and he has a 6.91 ERA since the beginning of August.Angels: Matt Shoemaker (2-2, 5.48 ERA) makes the sixth start of his injury-plagued season after getting chased in the third inning of last appearance in Oakland.
MESA http://www.redsfanproshop.com/authentic-cliff-pennington-jersey , Ariz. (AP) — absolutely nothing. If Chase Anderson and Zach Davies can return to form, they might not need one.Anderson, Davies and Jimmy Nelson were three of Milwaukee’s top pitchers in 2017, but they were spectators for much of the Brewers’ run to the NL Championship Series last year. Anderson was left off the postseason roster after he surrendered an NL-high 30 homers. Davies made just one relief appearance in the playoffs, and Nelson missed the whole season following surgery on his right shoulder.Without Anderson, Davies and Nelson, manager Craig Counsell leaned heavily on his powerful bullpen last October. He might not have to do that as much this year if Anderson’s mechanical adjustments pay off and Davies and Nelson can stay on the field.“It’s exciting, and I think the front office knows that Reggie Sanders Jersey , too,” Davies said. “I think they see that having down years and having injured years last year collectively that everybody comes back healthy and you know, Jimmy’s going to start to get into some games and start to feel ready to get back. So I think the front office sees that. I think we see it as a group too that we’re all excited for it.”Anderson and Davies each pitched an inning in Milwaukee’s spring opener Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. Anderson yielded a two-run homer to Kris Bryant in the first, and Davies retired the side in order in the second. The 31-year-old Anderson had a breakout season in 2017, going 12-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 25 starts. But the right-hander had some trouble with his motion last year and was never able to get on track. His final numbers — a 9-8 record and a 3.93 ERA in 30 starts — weren’t too bad, but Anderson was disappointed. And he turned that disappointment into motivation for this year.“That kind of fueled me in the offseason,” Anderson said. “It’s kind have been my lifespan in baseball. I’ve been the underdog a little bit.”Anderson has made some changes to his delivery, bringing his hands over his head to help keep them moving during his motion. He also is staying on top of the rubber to help his hips stay in the right place. He was a little up on the pitch Bryant drove over the wall in left-center, but felt good about his first day.“I was in the zone. That’s the goal for your first outing is stay in the zone http://www.redsfanproshop.com/authentic-cliff-pennington-jersey , come out healthy,” he said. “I felt like everything was crisp. The rhythm is starting to get going.”Davies led the Brewers with 17 wins, 33 starts and 191 1/3 innings two years ago. He was hampered by injuries last season and finished with a 2-7 record and a 4.77 ERA in 13 starts.Davies, who turned 26 on Feb. 7, and Anderson are part of a crowded field of candidates for Milwaukee’s rotation. Nelson, Jhoulys Chacin, Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta also are in the mix. However it shakes out, Davies thinks the Brewers will be in good shape.“Innings Joe Morgan Jersey , health and consistency is really what pitching is, and so I think as a group that’s what all of us focus on,” he said. “You don’t have to be the 300 strikeouts a year or the guy that throws 250 innings but as long as you’re out there and giving the team a chance to win then that’s really all you can ask for.” SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels manager Brad Ausmus likes to have his regulars play nine innings at least once in a spring training game and on Thursday, it was Mike Trout’s turn against the Arizona Diamondbacks.“He’s making all that money, he needs to play nine,” Ausmus said.Trout, who received a 12-year, $426.5 million contract Wednesday Dave Concepcion Jersey , went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the Angels’ 2-1 win over the D-backs. Trout struck out on a checked swing in the first against Arizona’s Merrill Kelly, delivered the two-out RBI single in the third, then was called out on strikes in the sixth. He grounded out to end the eighth. The Angels have two more days in Arizona before playing the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in Anaheim in an exhibition series. Team officials have said Trout will not talk about his contract until Sunday when the Angels hold a news conference outside Angel Stadium.NOTES: Ausmus said right-hander Taylor Cole will not be ready for the start of the season because of discomfort in his shoulder. … Jarrett Parker also is taking a few days off because of soreness in his oblique. … Ausmus was asked if there was any chance two-way player Shohei Ohtani could play in April. Ohtani is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and was expected to be the designated hitter this year. “I’d be shocked if it happened,” Ausmus said. “I wouldn’t put ‘no chance’ on it. I wouldn’t bet my family on it.” Asked if he’d wager $25, Ausmus said, yes, but added: “Keep in mind it’s an easy $25 for me to make because I can control what he does.”

Bauer finished second in the AL with a 2.21 ERA last year.Bauer noted the cold conditions proved advantageous in commanding his pitches.“My changeup is designed to slip, so when there’s no grip on the ball, it makes it real nice,” Bauer said. “I didn’t throw many curveballs http://www.marinersfanproshop.com/authentic-edgar-martinez-jersey , but the slider and changeup were really good.”Hanley Ramirez put the Indians on top 1-0 with a solo homer in the fourth inning. Sometimes it takes a little while for a hitter to get timing down,” said Ramirez, who signed a minor league deal with the Indians in late February and made the club during spring training. “I’ve been feeling good lately, and that’s the key.”As for swinging on a 3-0 pitch, he said Francona gave him the green light, but he remained cautious with his approach.“I only hit 3-0 when I feel good,” Ramirez said. “If I don’t feel like my timing is there, I won’t swing. I was looking for a pitch I could handle and that’s exactly what he threw.”JOINING THE 10K-10K CLUBThe Twins became just the second team since 1893 to open the season with their first two starters each striking out at least 10 batters. Jose Berrios posted 10 strikeouts on Thursday, followed by Odorizzi’s 11.The only other time that had happened was in 2001, when Randy Johnson struck out 10 and Curt Schilling fanned 12 in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ first two games.“We can’t ask for anything more than what we’ve got in the last two days,” Baldelli said.TRAINER’S ROOMIndians: Manager Terry Francona said Lindor (sprained left ankle) will visit Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Monday.
